Cognitive Rehabilitation / Remediation

Behavioral Medicine Associates provides Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy, also known as Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) and Cognitive Enhancement Therapy (CET), for patients who suffer cognitive impairment as a result of Head Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS).  The difficulties these patients often encounter involve memory, attention, concentration, learning, social behavior, safety judgment, as well as planning and carrying out future actions.

At stake is the patient’s ability to succeed at work as well as at home.  Without treatment for cognitive problems the long-term effects of Post-Concussion Syndrome/Traumatic Brain Injury can be devastating.

Our program of Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy is designed to help brain injured and cognitively impaired patients restore normal functioning and to compensate for cognitive deficits.

Cognitive rehabilitation is designed to take into account a broad range of neuro-functional strengths and weaknesses.  Treatment is tailored to help the individual to be as independent as possible in the management of everyday routines and responsibilities at both work and at home.

Cognitive rehabilitation therapy comprises four separate components:

  • Education about cognitive weaknesses and strengths The focus is on developing awareness of the problem.
  • Process training – this involves the development of skills to direct retraining and practicing the underlying cognitive skills needed.  The focus is on resolving the problem.
  • Strategy training – this involves the use of environmental, internal and external strategies.  The focus is on compensating rather than resolving the problem.
  • Functional activities training – this involves the application of the three other components in everyday life.  The focus is on real life improvements.

Any clients/patients who have suffered a head injury involving either loss of consciousness or the alteration of mental state (feeling dazed, dizzy or light-headed) and who exhibit, report or display any cognitive difficulties would benefit for a referral for this program.
