Neuropsychological Evaluation

Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that evaluates how the brain affects daily functioning.  Clinical neuropsychology makes use of a variety of assessment methods to determine function and dysfunction and applies this knowledge to evaluate, treat and rehabilitate patients with suspected or demonstrated neuropsychological problems including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Concussion Syndrome.

Neuropsychological evaluation provides an in-depth evaluation of brain functioning to identify and describe abilities and deficits.  The neuropsychological evaluation assesses the cognitive capabilities and limitations of the individual.  This evaluation is particularly important in determining treatment programs for persons with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) since it is one of the most effective methods to determine the nature and implications of TBI and its consequences.

Neuropsychological assessment involves the evaluation of cognitive abilities using a series of standardized assessment measures.  These evaluations are used to help diagnose and identify problems of attention, concentration, learning and memory.  These evaluations may also assess intellectual abilities, language functions, visual spatial skills as well as executive functioning which involves planning and organization.  The results of these evaluations can confirm diagnoses of brain injury and document deficits in functioning.

Behavioral Medicine Associates provides neuropsychological evaluations for patients who have experienced a traumatic brain injury.  Neuropsychological evaluations assess the person’s cognitive functioning to identify areas of weakness.  The goal is to develop a plan for cognitive remediation.  Behavioral Medicine Associates provides comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations that describe the patient’s condition and provides a clear diagnostic impression along with recommendations for future treatment.

Many patients may not become aware of or admit to the extent of their cognitive symptoms until they attempt to return to normal functioning.  Because of the very nature of diffuse traumatic brain injury the resulting deficits are not specific to particular domains of cognition.  The following are the areas of cognitive ability that are impacted:

  • speed and capacity of information processing
  • complex attention
  • learning and memory
  • integrative and abstract thinking
  • executive functions, attention, concentration and emotional and behavioral control

Behavioral Medicine Associates is your resource for the evaluation and treatment of traumatic brain injuries.
